Our Bahamian waters are full of colorful fish and coral that rises from a sandy bottom with a vertical growth of 10 feet (3 meters). The reef consists of various corals, sponges, sea fans and is a home to a variety of marine life, such as angel fish, parrot fish, spiny lobster, turtles, sting rays, moray eels and much more. In some places the reef has even grown into intricate canyons and tunnels, providing lots of opportunities for you to explore. It is a divers paradise and a great place to learn how to scuba dive.
Come and explore the one of the many wrecks that we have. Our most popular wreck is Theo’s Wreck. Which is a 240-foot freighter that was sunk in 1982. It came to rest intact on her port side in roughly 100 feet of water, adjacent to the continental shelf, with the upper reaches of the ship in a more moderate 65 feet of water. On most days, the water is so clear that you can see the hull from the surface.
The wreck has a patch of orange cup corals growing under the bow, and is otherwise covered in sponges and black corals and is thoroughly colonized by a variety of fish. A giant green moray eel, named “Pickles” along with a few other spotted eels, are known to reside in the wreck, while sharks, rays and sea turtles have been spotted visiting the ship from the open ocean.
Grand Bahama is home to Shark Junction, one of the world’s first and best shark encounters. In roughly 40 feet of water, divers will swim among 10-25 Caribbean reef sharks varying in size from 4-10 feet long, as they cruise by at arm’s length.
